Last year’s Glass House 100km was a surreal experience that I want to get my teeth into again and again. Inspired by the myriad of adventure podcasts and ‘ordinary’ people giving it a go and realising the way forward is to set goals – some big ones at that – I’ve decided to organise a run from Brisbane to Sydney.
I wouldn’t call it a midlife crisis (I’m not quite half way done yet). It’d love to set the stage for the next third of my life. One that involves nature and great physical challenges but also huge rewards that can’t be measured in terms of the weight of my wallet but rather the thickness of my photo album and the stories I can share with my kids.
So the Brisbane to Sydney run is to be my first adventure. Inspired by Andrew Hedgeman, who ran the same approximate route in 12 days. There is also a runner Joe Ward, who followed Andrew’s footsteps and set the record to 10 days – an amazing effort effectively running 90kms per day! But my goal isn’t to break any body else’s record but my own.
I hope my family will be the backbone of this endeavour have already tried my big sell to them – promises of an amazing journey, a tour of the Australian east coast, days of art projects for my kids and wife, a chance for my parents to spend some much longed for time with their grandkids and an opportunity to share in something truly memorable with my parents. There will be struggles, hurdles and problems to solve but i hope our lives will be much richer for it.
That’s it for my introduction for now. I plan to use this blog to document my training, my progress and also the logistical challenges that I’m sure an adventure like this will undoubtedly attract.
My personal goals are:
To finish
To see what is possible when you set your sights on a goal
To encourage my kids to dream big
To prepare my body for more adventures
To inspire others to do the same.
